Explore the blue-tiled monuments of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, hike for two days in the Tian Shan Mountains, trek through rarely visited valleys in the Nuratau Mountains, camp beneath the stars and spend two nights in a yurt camp near Lake Aydarkul.

This is not a classic sightseeing tour. It is an active journey for travellers who want to discover Uzbekistan’s famous Silk Road heritage as well as the mountains, villages, and quiet landscapes that most visitors never experience.

What makes this Uzbekistan Tour different

Most Uzbekistan tours focus almost entirely on the Silk Road cities. This journey also takes you into the landscapes beyond them: the valleys and ridges of the Tian Shan, rarely visited trails through the Nuratau Mountains and the open desert surrounding Lake Aydarkul.

The itinerary was not created behind a desk, but shaped by my own travels and hiking experiences in Uzbekistan. After exploring the country extensively over several years and hiking in both the Tian Shan and Nuratau Mountains, I designed this journey together with my trusted Uzbek guide, Ismat.

Our goal was to create the kind of tour I would want to join myself: one that combines Uzbekistan’s great cultural landmarks with places that are difficult to visit independently, while supporting local drivers, mountain teams, family-run accommodation and small businesses.

Ismat and I have been running these Uzbekistan tours together since 2023, continually refining the experience using our knowledge and feedback from previous groups.

Ismat leads the journey with support from specialist city guides and local mountain teams. Now in his sixties, he is remarkably fit and brings extensive mountain experience, boundless energy and a wonderful sense of humour to the group.

Is this tour for you?

This tour is designed for active, open-minded travellers who enjoy culture just as much as nature. Previous groups have included solo travellers, couples and friends from around the world, generally ranging in age from their 20s to their late 60s. This tour is a good match if you:

  • want to combine Uzbekistan’s Silk Road heritage with hiking and nature
  • can comfortably hike up to 20 km on steep and uneven mountain terrain
  • are comfortable wild camping for two nights without showers, toilets or electricity
  • do not mind sharing rooms, train compartments, tents and yurts during parts of the journey
  • enjoy travelling in a small international group with people of different ages and nationalities
  • are comfortable with early starts, full days and occasional itinerary changes caused by weather or local conditions

The hikes are non-technical, but great fitness and experience with full-day walks are required. This is an active, experience-filled journey, balanced with some free time in the Silk Road cities.

After a picnic in the mountains, we descend and return to Tashkent. Following dinner, we board the overnight train to Khiva. Travelling by train is an experience in itself and a wonderful opportunity to share the journey with local passengers.
