Each day had its own, carefully chosen highlights and if something didn’t go as planned (like unreachable destinations due to roadwork) we could always rely on our guide Kamchy for equally good alternatives. The program, consisting of hikes, workshops/shows and incredible food never got boring and could always be adjusted for individual wishes that came up along the way.
The accommodations were cozy, spacious and clean throughout the whole trip and usually featured nice views.

- Who can join: The 8-day off-season Kyrgyzstan Tour is suitable for adventurous travelers aged 18 and above. The average age of the travelers who joined my tours so far is between 20 and 65 years. The participants are usually solo travelers, friends, and couples. Families with kids aged 8 and above and who have an adventurous mindset are also welcome.
This 8-day off-season Tour offers the ideal combination to explore the culture and nature of Kyrgyzstan. This tour is for you if:

This 8-day off-season journey through Kyrgyzstan invites you to experience the country’s raw beauty when it’s at its quietest. From the ancient Burana Tower near Bishkek to the vast alpine landscapes of Chon Kemin Valley, you’ll trace the old Silk Road routes through mountains, lakes, and canyons, where the colors of the land change with every turn.
As you circle the shimmering Issyk Kul Lake, you’ll hike through red rock formations, wander into peaceful gorges, and rest your feet in soothing hot springs. In mountain towns like Karakol, you’ll discover a blend of cultures and architecture, while high in the valleys of Jeti Oguz and Kok Jaiyk, you’ll spend a night in a traditional yurt camp, surrounded by silence and stars.
Along the way, you’ll meet the people who keep Kyrgyz traditions alive – felt-makers, shepherds, and eagle hunters – and share moments of connection over homemade meals and tea. This is not just a sightseeing trip but an immersion into nomadic life, offering a deep sense of peace, discovery, and freedom in the heart of the Tien Shan mountains.

Day 1: Bishkek – Burana Tower – Chon Kemin
We meet up at 10 am at Ala Too Square, the central square of Bishkek. We pack our belongings in the van and start our adventure with a journey through history as we drive for an hour to visit the Burana Tower, an ancient minaret built over a thousand years ago. Once part of the Great Silk Road city of Balasagyn, this site offers a fascinating glimpse into Kyrgyzstan’s rich past. We’ll enjoy lunch with a local family before continuing our scenic drive into the mountains.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Chon Kemin, a picturesque valley surrounded by lush meadows and forested hills. After settling into a cozy guesthouse, we’ll take a relaxed horse ride through the valley, a perfect way to soak in the serenity and beauty of this peaceful region. Overnight stay in a family-run guesthouse.

Day 2: Chon Kemin – Konorchek Canyon – Cholpon Ata Hot Springs
After breakfast, we set out for a short drive to the striking Konorchek Canyon, a natural wonder of red rock formations sculpted by wind and time. We’ll hike for about 3-4 hours, following a dried riverbed that winds between towering cliffs, rewarding us with panoramic views of the canyon’s maze-like landscape.
In the afternoon, we continue our journey toward Issyk Kul Lake, the world’s second-largest alpine lake. Following the northern shore, we’ll reach Cholpon Ata, where we spend the night at a guesthouse and where you can relax and unwind in the rejuvenating hot springs.

Day 3: Cholpon Ata – Grigorievka & Semenovka Gorges – Karakol
Today’s drive takes us deeper into the heart of Issyk Kul’s northern shore, where we’ll explore the twin valleys of Grigorievka and Semenovka. These gorges are beloved for their pristine rivers, evergreen forests, and snow-capped mountain backdrops, popular in summer yet wonderfully tranquil in the off-season.
After leisurely walks and photo stops, we’ll continue eastward to Karakol, a charming town and the cultural hub of the Issyk Kul region. Known for its blend of Russian architecture, Dungan heritage, and alpine atmosphere, Karakol is the perfect base for tomorrow’s hike. In the evening, we go to a restaurant and taste the local cuisine and specialties of this region. Overnight stay in a local guesthouse.

day 4: Day Hike to the Karakol Gorge
Today we’ll head into nature again and go on an easy day-hike (16km – 6 hours) to the picturesque Karakol gorge. You’ll see the stunning beauty of this mountain gorge by walking along the river that comes from the glaciers further in the Tian Shan Mountain Range.
The rich vegetation with its vivid colors and beautiful landscapes will be a pleasure for the eyes! We’ll hike to a roaring waterfall and then hike the trail back to the starting point, from where we return by car to Karakol and spend another evening in the guesthouse there.

Day 5: Karakol – Jeti Oguz – Kok Jaiyk Valley (yurt stay)
This morning, a short drive brings us to Jeti Oguz, famous for its striking red sandstone cliffs known as the Seven Bulls. We’ll take a gentle walk to admire the rock formations and learn about the legends behind them before continuing deeper into the Kok Jaiyk Valley, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most breathtaking alpine meadows.
Here, we’ll spend the night in a traditional yurt camp, surrounded by mountains and open sky. Depending on the season, this can be a cozy, year-round experience that offers a taste of nomadic life. Enjoy the warmth of Kyrgyz hospitality and an evening filled with serenity and starlight.

Day 6: Kok Jaiyk Valley – Barskoon Waterfalls – Skazka Canyon – Bokonbaevo
Following the southern shore of Issyk Kul, we drive into the Barskoon Gorge, a lush valley of pine forests and sparkling waterfalls. We’ll take a short walk to enjoy the cascades and fresh mountain air before continuing west along the lakeshore.
Our next stop is the Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon, where erosion has shaped the sandstone into whimsical towers and creatures of vivid red and orange hues. After exploring this surreal landscape, we’ll arrive in the village of Bokonbaevo, where we’ll spend the night in a warm, welcoming guesthouse run by a local family.

Day 7: Bokonbaevo – Felt-Making – Shatyly Panorama – Ak Sai Canyon – Bokonbaevo
This morning, we’ll visit a local family of artisans to watch a fascinating demonstration of traditional felt-making, an ancient Kyrgyz craft used to produce colorful carpets and household items. You can even participate in the process if you like!
Afterwards, we drive to the foothills for a short hike to the Shatyly Panorama, offering sweeping views over Issyk Kul and the surrounding mountains.
After lunch, we’ll head out again to explore Ak Sai Canyon, also known as the “Valley of Forgotten Rivers.” The tranquility and layered rock formations here create an otherworldly atmosphere, a perfect finale to our day of discovery. Return to Bokonbaevo for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: Bokonbeavo – Eagle Hunter Demonstration – bishkek
Before returning to the capital, we’ll meet a local Eagle Hunter who will share the secrets of this ancient nomadic tradition. You’ll witness an impressive demonstration of the bond between the hunter and his golden eagle, an unforgettable experience that offers insight into Kyrgyz heritage.
Afterwards, we’ll make our way back to Bishkek (approx. 4–5 hours), stopping for lunch en route. Your driver will drop you off at your designated location in the city, marking the end of an unforgettable journey through Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, canyons, and nomadic culture.
The tour and this trip finishes around 5pm. There’s an optional dinner to say goodbye to our amazing group of friends!

Most international flights from Bishkek leave in the early morning. You can choose to spend the evening in Bishkek before going to the airport after the farewell dinner or stay an extra night at a ho(s)tel in Bishkek and leave the day after. You’ll receive lodging suggestions for Bishkek upon confirming your booking.

- Medical or travel insurance (mandatory to join this tour). I recommend SafetyWing, HeyMondo or IATI Backpacker if you want a good insurance provider (in case you don’t have one yet).

Booking & Cancellation
Confirm your participation with a deposit of €350 per person.
Deposits can be made via a standard bank transfer in EUR or via online transfer (Wise) in EUR or USD.
As soon as I receive your booking, I’ll send out the payment details. You have 48 hours to pay the deposit. If not, I have to cancel your participation and reserve the place for the next person who books.
The remaining tour costs can be paid either in cash on the first day of the tour or via online transfer (a 2% fee might apply) at the latest three weeks before the start of the trip.

Cancellation policy
If for any reason you can’t join this tour, we’ll refund your deposit – minus €100 administrative costs – if you cancel at the latest 3 months before the start date of the tour.
In case we have to cancel this tour due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control (pandemic, political reasons, natural disasters,…), you’ll receive a full refund of the tour costs (minus transaction costs). We’re not responsible for and therefore don’t refund any flight cancellations and/or flight expenses.
