A brief history of Osh
Osh is Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest city and with a history spanning 3000 years, it’s also the country’s oldest settlement.
Described as a cultural melting pot, Osh was an important place for silk production from the 8th century BC onwards.
The fertile land of the nearby Fergana Valley drew in Chinese trade caravans who made their way over the Alay mountains to Osh. During this time, this southern city was a key silk production and trading point along the ancient Silk Road on route to Uzbekistan.
Bringing a fantastic mix of cuisines and cultures to Osh, The Silk Road fell into disuse in the 14th century. However, this vibrant and bustling city still remains to be a center of trade in the region today.
In 1876, Imperial Russia laid down borders across the region that placed Osh within the Kyrgyz Soviet Republic, though the population in Osh at the time was mainly Uzbek.
With communist reign and industrialization in the 1960s, the landscape of this city was changed again. Despite this, Osh still carries all of the characteristics of a classic Uzbek city.
Today many people still use it as a passing place on their way from/to Uzbekistan or to the mountains of Tajikistan and the Pamir Highway.
However, those who choose to stay longer are granted the opportunity to experience Osh’s unique and multicultural environment where more than 80 different ethnicities reside.
Together they have helped shape the culture of Osh with their varying cuisine and customs.
Is Osh worth visiting?
The atmosphere in Osh city is one that is truly unique and not comparable with any other area in Kyrgyzstan.
The complex history of Osh (Ош) with its Soviet past, the cultural influence of the Kyrgyz people, the city’s close proximity to the Uzbek border and the large Uzbek population have created an eclectic mix of cultures, languages, and religions.
The city has a blend of Soviet architecture along with older Kyrgyz buildings and Uzbek wooden houses that look similar to those in the Fergana Valley.
With less than a third of the population of Bishkek, allow the scenic location of this small city to draw you in and read on to find out about the many interesting things to do whilst in Osh.
An added plus is that you can fly to Osh relatively cheaply from many international destinations making it a brilliant and affordable starting point for exploring Central Asia and Southern Kyrgyzstan.
This city attracts a growing number of international tourists every year and remains to be a gateway to some of the best food, culture, outdoor adventures, and history in Central Asia.
Is Osh safe?
The city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan, in general, is a safe city to visit with lovely locals and so much to offer. When traveling to any destination, it’s important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
If you’re thinking about visiting this area of Kyrgyzstan, it may be important to be aware that the nearby Fergana valley is a region with underlying social tensions that still exist today as well as on the Kyrgyz/Uzbek and Kyrgyz/Kazakh borders.
However, when visiting Osh as a tourist, you probably wouldn’t notice any of the social tensions.
If you plan on crossing a border from Kyrgyzstan, you should check in advance which border posts are open and safe to cross.
What is the best time of the year to visit Osh Kyrgyzstan
The lower located cities in Kyrgyzstan are usually very hot in summer (average temperature 36°C) and cold in winter (average -10°C).
The best time to visit Osh is therefore from the beginning of Spring (early April) through to the end of Autumn (mid-November).
If you’re drawn to hiking in the mountains or traveling along the Pamir Highway, be sure to keep in mind that your best window of opportunity is most likely during the summer for the kindest of weather conditions.
If you’re keen to avoid the peak tourist season, plan to visit Osh and Kyrgyzstan either before May or after August.
However, don’t wait too long to book your trip as some tour companies start closing for the season around mid-September.

How to get to Osh
There are a few routes that you might take to get to Osh Kyrgyzstan as it’s a popular place for onward travel between Bishkek and the north of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
How to get from/to Osh airport
Osh International airport is relatively small and just 10km, 15 minutes drive from the city center. There are a number of direct flights from Bishkek that fly daily from Osh as well as a few international flights; however, generally, it’s not a busy airport.
A taxi will cost you less than $3 to the airport from Osh city. Alternatively, you can take a marshrutka, the #107 or #142 depart every 10 minutes from car park 1 at the bus stop, between stands 7-19 and the journey will take you 25 mins.
How to get from Bishkek to Osh
The quickest and easiest way to travel between Bishkek and Osh is by plane.
Ten Jet, Air Manas and Air Kyrgyzstan all have flights that leave daily, taking about an hour and will cost you between $40 and $50. We recommend that you book directly via one of these local airlines’ websites.
If time is on your side and you’d rather take a more scenic route by road, you can take a shared taxi which will take you roughly 12 hours depending on the driver and the conditions and it will cost you about $12.
Taxis leave from the New bus station in Bishkek and also from the corner of Masalieva and Navoi, by the Deluxe hotel.
How to get from Tajikistan to Osh
At least one car leaves per day from Murgab, Tajikistan to Osh or you can take a shared taxi across the border at the Kyzyl Art pass.
From Uzbekistan to Osh
The Dostyk border happens to be only 10km away from Osh if you plan to cross from Uzbekistan into the Fergana Valley.
Getting around Osh
Osh is fairly accessible as it isn’t such a big city. You can travel around easily with a combination of walking, taxis and marshrutkas.
There’s are two great mapping apps that you can download onto your phone for use whilst in Osh.
They’re called 2GIS and Maps.me and they include a detailed map of Osh as well as business names and restaurants. It’s also the best resource for marshrutka routes within the city. It’s also very easy and quick to hail a taxi in Osh.
It’s important to note that options for train travel in Kyrgyzstan are limited due to the mountainous terrain of the country and of the limited funds of the national train company Kyrgyz Temir Joly. The southern branch of the Kyrgyz rail network that connects Osh with Uzbekistan has not been operational since 2010.

1. Sulaiman-Too
Right in the heart of Osh sits the mountain Sulaiman – Too, a UNESCO world heritage site that marks a halfway point on a Silk Road route connecting Europe and China.
It has five peaks and slopes marking holy places of worship as well as two 16th century, reconstructed mosques.
This ancient monument has over a hundred noted sites with petroglyphs that date back to the Bronze Age and is a sacred place that many people summit in order to visit the shrine that sits at the top.
The sacred properties of visiting this special landmark are believed to provide cures for headaches, back pain, and infertility.
A truly celebrated and holy site, this mountain has been worshipped for many millennia. Previously known as ‘Barakoo’, meaning beautiful mountain, you may be richly rewarded for your climb to the top as it’s known to be one of the best places to watch the sunset over the city.
2. National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex at Sulaiman-Too
Head to the Western end of the mountain and you’ll see the unusual Soviet-built large metallic hood that expands over the entrance to Osh’s Regional Museum.
Built in1949, this building was amazingly created inside a natural cave and is one of Kyrgyzstan’s largest museums.
Split over two floors, the first floor has over 13 man-made rooms with collections that include 33,000 pieces of archaeological and ethnographic artifacts alongside sculptures, paintings, and works of handicrafts. The second floor opens up through the cave to a panoramic view of Osh city.
It’s a truly unique place to visit in Osh and my top tip would be to hire a personal city guide who can explain more about the history of this place and the unique artifacts on display.

3. Tallest statue of Lenin in Central Asia
Overlooking the Osh central square is where you will find a 25-meter high statue of Vladimir Lenin, the first head of the Russian Soviet state.
Erected in 1975, it is said to be one of the largest remaining Lenin statues in the world and the second-largest in Central Asia.
Facing the city hall, this enormous statue stands as a reminder of the time of communist rule in Osh as Lenin still stands proud, dominating the vista.
4. Zadneprovsky Park
The peaceful Zadneprovsky Park sits just off from Central Square where Lenin’s statue stands.
Surrounding St Michael’s Cathedral which was built in 1909, this park houses some important monuments that pay respect to and remember the lives of the many Kyrgyz soldiers lost fighting for Russia during the Great Patriotic War (WWII), the 400 Kyrgyz victims of Chornobyl and also the Tears of Mother memorial for the people who passed during the riots that happened in the city in 2010.
5. Jayma Bazaar
The Jayma Bazaar stretches across the entire city center and it is one of the most historical things to visit in Osh.
One of the oldest markets in Central Asia, this market sits next to the Ak Buura river where people have come to buy and trade for over 2000 years.
Go and wander through the maze of alleyways, taking in the sights, smells, and sounds, and see where local Kyrgyz do their shopping. The variety of goods available is huge, with everything from clothing, food, traditional handicrafts, and souvenirs available.
Sunday mornings are particularly busy and you can take a marshrutka (minivan) to the bazaar that will drop you off at the eastern entrance.
This bustling bazaar still remains to be the heart of trade in the Kyrgyz Fergana Valley and is one of the best things to do in Osh
6. Navoi Park
Navoi Park stretches along the river from the end of the Jayma Bazaar and this leafy, lush green space is a popular place to visit in Osh for families and children. There’s a gaming area, amusement rides, and some lovely cafes that all sit well in this great park.
7. 3-story yurt
The Alymbek Datka Park is home to the world’s only 3-story yurt. Inside the hurt is an exhibition about Alymbek and his wife Kurmanjan.
Alymbek fought for independence for the Kyrgyz Alai tribes during the Russian Tsarist occupation and earned the title Datka based on his leadership of his people.
Kurmanjan, his wife, went on to become the leader of Kyrgyzstan who famously managed to make an agreement of peace with the Tsars, protecting the lives of her people.
The exhibition inside holds on display an array of cultural items surrounding Kyrgyz history and nomadic traditions.
8. Uzbek neighborhood
Osh is a mixing pot of different cultures and the varying types of housing in the city are a clear reminder of this.
In the backstreets near Amir Temur, leading away from Sulaiman-Too it’s obvious to see the two very different styles of buildings in Osh.
The Wabi-Soviet concrete apartment blocks built between the 1960s and 1980s and the Uzbek mahalla neighborhoods with large, multi-generational houses have shaped the way the Uzbek people have lived for generations.
The carved wooden cornices and grape-covered courtyards are spread around Osh and are so worth visiting!
7. Soviet Murals
During the Soviet occupation, alongside the not-so-inspiring concrete apartments, the Soviets made their mark by spreading decorative murals around the city of Osh.
There are several to see scattered all over Osh and a lot of them, similar to the Lenin statue, are still in relatively untouched condition.
The murals were based on Soviet ideologies and there is a range of different styles and designs for you to find whilst visiting Osh.
There’s an Aeroflot-themed mosaic, a giant horse-themed one near the Lenin statue as well as one of the Olympic Misha bears.
Most of these would have been created during the 1970s and 1980s during the Soviet construction boom.

Things to do and places to visit near Osh – Day trips from Osh
10. Animal market and Hippodrome
If you happen to find yourself with nothing to do on a Sunday morning in Osh, why not take a taxi to the outskirts of the city and visit the animal market at the Osh Hippodrome.
Locals bring their livestock (horses, goats, cows and sheep) to sell at the market and it’s a noisy and bustling experience to behold.
There’s a lot of passionate bargaining by men wearing traditional kalpaks (high crowned hats).
I must warn you though, be prepared for an early start as most trading is finished by 10 am. The hippodrome is a 10-minute ride from Osh towards Tuleyken and you can take a taxi, bus number 5, or marshrutka 105 from the Aravanskaya bus stop in Osh and head east to the end of the bus line.
The Hippodrome is also the location for ‘Kok Buru’- local horse games that happen during holidays and festivals.
11. Uzgen
If you’ve been to see all of the sights mentioned above, there are some great day trips to be had near Osh.
The ancient town of Uzgen is totally worth a visit for its 11th-century mausoleum complex and interesting Kakhanid buildings. Similar to the Islamic architecture in nearby Uzbekistan, you also have the opportunity to visit some traditional rice mills and a bathhouse.
This small town is easy to visit in a day, take a marshrutka from the new Osh bus station or taxis leave from Kelechek bazaar.
12. Kyrgyz-Ata national park
If you’re happy to venture a little further from Osh, the Kyrgyz-Ata National Park is 40 km from the city and is becoming more and more popular with tourists and international visitors.
The park itself is less than 12 sq km however within this small area is a really varied range of stunning scenery from the valleys of the Mazar to the Kara-Koi rivers. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature if you find that you don’t have the time to head to the Alay mountains.
Abshir-Ata is a popular waterfall for locals and also a great lunch spot, you will also find some good hiking opportunities nearby that will take you upstream where you’ll cross alpine lakes ending up at the food of Kichi Alay.
From Osh, you can take public transport as far as the village of Nookat, however, you will need to arrange your own transport from there for the final 28km to the park gate.
I would recommend booking a trip with a tour group as many companies offer day tours.
13. Ak Tor Pass and the lower Alay Mountains
Only a few hours South of Osh is a hidden gem of a trek called Ak Tor Pass.
Offering some of the most magnificent scenery and epic views in all of Central Asia (yes, it’s that beautiful!) from lush green pasture-covered valleys to rugged mountains, you won’t be disappointed after booking a couple of days trekking in this stunning landscape.
Experience Kyrgyzstan’s true nomadic culture by staying the night in some of the local yurts along the way and enjoy some traditional Kyrgyz food too!

14. Arslanbob
Set in the scenic Baba Atash mountains, amidst walnut trees sits the sweet town of Arslanbob.
Here you will get a taste of life in a rural Kyrgyzstan village however it is worth noting that most of the people here are Uzbek.
You can choose to spend the night in one of the many homestays and fill up on traditional home-cooked food and then head off on one of the many hikes from the village to nearby waterfalls, exploring the walnut forests on your way. If you’re looking for more of a challenging hike, you can go on a multi-day hike too.
Where to eat in Osh – Restaurants in Osh
How apt is it that the word ‘osh’ in Uzbek translates as ‘food’. Osh is known to be one of the best places in Kyrgyzstan for food.
In this multicultural city, there are many delicious traditional dishes for both meat-eaters and vegetarians to sample whilst visiting Osh.
Some specialty dishes that you might eat whilst in Osh are plov (rice pilaf with veggies, meat, and spices) manti (veg/meat-stuffed dumplings), lepeshki (flatbreads), shorpo (lamb and veg stew), shashlik (lamb kebabs), and borsok (fried bread).

The best Osh restaurants, cafes and pubs
- Brio
Brio is a great little coffee shop that caters well to tourists. This place not only offers up a good atmosphere, it serves vegan dishes and offers decent WiFi, making it an ideal stop for any digital nomad in the area.
If you don’t eat meat, this place has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options available such as fried potatoes and cabbage salad. The staff all speak English and with its central location, it’s a good pit stop in between sightseeing.
- Tsarskii Dvor
This place has adopted a rather quirky cabin vibe and resembles a Bavarian ski lodge in the winter. During the summer you can take full advantage of their outdoor terrace and enjoy a beer.
This is the place to try some traditional Kyrgyz food in the form of shashlik, grilled lamb kebabs, which is one of their specialties.
The kitchen is open until 11 pm and with an enticing atmosphere, you could enjoy this place and some live music here for hours and then head round to the nightclub afterward!
- Oazis
Located in the central district of Aravanski, on the left (west) bank of the Ak-Burra river, Oazis is a small fast food place that is best known for its shwarmas. Open from 9 am to midnight, this eatery is small but its menu is huge.
I would suggest you try one of their well-known shwarmas for less than a dollar, it’s well worth it.

Thanks for the useful suggestions throughout Central Asia, Cynthia. Actually will be heading towards Kyrgyzstan tomorrow evening for the first time, but I do have a recent update for you regarding flights to Osh.
On July 7, 2026, there was an incident involving the landing gear of a TezJet plane. While nobody was killed, the State Civil Aviation Agency subsequently revoked TezJet’s license on July 10, 2026. Not sure if this is temporary or permanent, but it led to all flights from that airline being cancelled until further notice. I had to rebook using Asman Airlines, though Aero Nomad and Sky Fru also fly Bishkek to Osh.
